Excursions from Beverley

Saturday 5th October 2019, Beverley
We spent a few days at the end of our travels around the north of England with our son and family in Beverley. It was wonderful to leave the wet and the cold outside and spend a few nights sleeping warm and dry in a real bed surrounded by our family and entertained by our granddaughters.

At the weekend when Neil was not at work, together with our eldest granddaughter we visited the medieval village of Wharram Percy near Pickering. There was not an enormous amount to see with only the outline of the buildings remained and the ruined walls of the village church. It is though one of the best researched of Britains 3,000+ vestigal mediaeval villages.

Over the weekend we also visited a refuge for sick children. It turned out to be a very uplifting and happy experience and Jill enjoyed playing with some of the outdoor games and musical instruments as we explored the grounds with our granddaughters.

Yesterday Neil accompanied us on a trip to Burton Agnes Hall. It proved to be a very attractive property set in stunning gardens. Built  as an Elizabethan manor house by Sir Henry Griffin between 1601 and 1610 near Driffield in the East Riding.

We finally met up for lunch with Ian's friend and colleague Elizabeth from his work on the National body for local history studies. Burnby Hall lies midway between Beverley and York, where Elizabeth lives,  and made an enjoyable meeting place for a reunion lunch together.
